Coldwell Banker 13, Scotiabank 12

The CI Little League Girls Softball division continued on Thursday, August 6th, as Coldwell Banker edged first place Scotiabank, 13-12, in a very entertaining game. The contest actually began on Wednesday but was halted in the first inning due to a swift moving thunderstorm, with Coldwell Banker leading 3-0.

On Thursday Coldwell Banker picked up right where they left off, scoring eleven runs over the first two innings, with clutch hitting, great base running and taking advantage of a few walks. Scotiabank rallied with nine runs over the final three innings to nearly overcome the early deficit.

The decisive plays came in the fourth inning. Annie Hawkins and Kenia Rostran scored on a 2 run single by Aydis Rostran to give Coldwell Banker a 13-11 lead, giving Scotiabank a chance to win in the bottom of the inning. Kenia, playing catcher, then made two great plays to save the game for Coldwell Banker. First she tagged out a Scotiabank runner who tried to sprint home on a passed ball. Then, after Aleigha General had scored to make it 13-12, Kenia threw a perfect ball to Madison Malice, who tagged out the potential tying runner trying to steal second.

Annie, Kenia and Aydis were each on base all three times for Coldwell Banker, combining for seven of the team’s thirteen runs. Madison contributed with two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. Left fielder Martina Watler made a very good catch on a high fly ball.

Aleigha scored three runs for Scotiabank, while showing off her outstanding base-running skills. Zhanna McDonald was on base all three times with two walks and a double.

Players of the Game:

Kenia Rostran (Coldwell Banker): Three hits, three runs scored, two RBI, and two clutch defensive plays in the last inning.

Annie Hawkins (Coldwell Banker): On base all three times, two runs scored, and solid defense at first base.

Coldwell Banker 12, Kirk Freeport 11

Coldwell Banker secured their second victory of the week by outlasting Kirk Freeport 12-11, in a game that had spectators on the edge of their seats until the very last play.

Coldwell Banker took the early lead, 6-4 after two innings, but Kirk Freeport rallied for four runs in the third inning to take an 8-6 lead. After Coldwell Banker regained the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third, Kirk Freeport put three runs across in the top of the fourth to tie the score at 11-11. In the bottom of the inning, after Madison Malice reached on an error, Aydis Rostran brought her home to win the game with a solid double to left centre.

For Kirk Freeport, second baseman Keirsten McLaughlin had a fine game with two good catches, solid fielding on grounders, and two runs scored. Shortstop Demae Lee made a great play by backing up at third base and throwing out a runner at home plate. On offense, Sofia Watler, Maddison Thompson and Sade Parchment each reached base all three times.

For Coldwell Banker, catcher Kenia Rostran made a couple of really good plays to put runners out at home, with left fielder Martina Watler making an excellent throw on one of them. Right fielder Jada Jennings made a quick throw to retire a runner at first base. Leadoff batter Annie Hawkins was on base all three times with two walks and a 2 RBI single, while Hannah Gibson was two for two, with a two run homer to right field.

In an incredibly rare scoring feat, every Kirk Freeport batter scored at least one run during the game, and every Coldwell Banker batter scored at least once, truly making it a total team effort for both teams!

Player of the Game:

Martina Watler (Coldwell Banker): Two hits, one run scored, one RBI, good hustle, and a great throw from left field.

Keirsten McLaughlin (Kirk Freeport): Two runs scored and excellent all around defense at second base.
