Voters in Grenada are going to the polls on November 5th, a year ahead of the constitutionally due date.

Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell set the process in motion in the hopes of securing a second consecutive term after he led his ruling National Democratic Congress(NDC) party to victory in 2022

The main challenge is expected to come from the official opposition New National Party, now under the leadership of Emmalin Pierre, after former prime minister and party founder Dr Keith Mitchell announced his resignation from politics. He had previously stepped down from the leadership of the NNP and was succeeded by Pierre, who will now become the first woman to lead the party into a general election.

There are 15 elected seats in Grenada’s bicameral parliament with another 13 in the Senate for appointed members.

Grenada’s politics, which has been dominated by two parties in recent years, will this year see a third party joining the bid for power in the November 5th poll. The Democratic People’s Movement (DPM), formed last November by ex-NNP MP and tourism minister, Peter David, has announced that it will contest all 15 seats.

In the 2022 election, the ruling NDC of Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell won nine of the 15 seats with the NNP taking the other six.

Dickon Mitchell is the youngest prime minister in the Caribbean, having assumed office as Prime Minister of Grenada on June 24th 2022, at the age of 44.

Economic and cost-of-living-related issues are expected to dominate the campaign, alongside growing pressure from the United States and the European Union over its Citizenship by Investment Passport(CIP).
