During the month of March, the focus worldwide is to celebrate women’s successes and their determined efforts in these islands.  Department of Sports place even more emphasis during this month, to further inspire, educate, and involve our women and girls, on the significant role sports in every capacity can positively impact lives. It is vital, that we recognize women and girls for their accomplishments. Also, that we highlight the advancements made and, continue to ensure that we bridge gaps by providing and supporting inspiring initiatives, that will increase participation in sports overall; and, physical exercise activities.

Our women and girls have experienced enormous pressure, uneasiness and self-doubt post Covid 19. Some of us coped more ably than others; which in no way belittle anyone who struggled more than others, or may still be struggling. In the coming weeks we will post short remarks from a variety of people in our community, who play a role in the forward movement of sports in our community, in myriad ways recreationally and competitively. We believe that countless others will continue to be inspired by this. We cannot echo this quote enough. “International Women’s Day is not country, group or organization specific. It is a day that belongs to ALL groups, collectively everywhere”. This year’s theme worldwide is #InspireInclusion.

Director of Sports Kurt Hyde, lends his wholehearted support to our ventures and had this to say… “In Women’s Month 2024, we acknowledge the resilience, courage, and achievements of women worldwide. It’s a time to celebrate the progress made in advancing gender equality and to recognize the ongoing challenges that women still face. From breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields to leading movements for social justice and equality, women continue to inspire us with their determination and strength. As we honor Women’s Month this year, let us reaffirm our commitment to empowering women, amplifying their voices, and creating a more inclusive and equitable world for all. It’s a time to celebrate the past, embrace the present, and work together towards a future where every woman has the opportunity to thrive and succeed”.

My supervisor Assistant Director of Sports, Everton Edwards fully lends his support, to all wellness initiatives; programmes; and events. He had this to say… “Absolutely, March 2024 stands as a testament to honoring the incredible achievements of women worldwide. From groundbreaking leaders to resilient athletes, their impact spans across various fields, leaving an indelible mark on history. This Women’s Month serves as a moment of tribute, acknowledging strides in gender equality, science, arts, and sports”.

Let’s highlight individuals like Everton Edward: “I seized wonderful opportunities to champion women’s empowerment, fostering a legacy that resonates with future generations. As we celebrate, let’s reflect on the progress made and renew our commitment to supporting the journey toward a more inclusive and equitable world for all women”.

That being said, we thank all women and girls for: The immeasurable ways, they each have devoted their effort and time, contributing exceptionally to the advancement of sports or health for our sports women and girls in our islands. The work is far from over, if we want better opportunities for women and girls in our islands.  This is not to be taken lightly, and more so, in times where we face so much challenges. It corroborates that women and girls should be given the necessary resources, that will allow them to get explore opportunities, so that they can accomplish even more. This will inspire others to the same point.

I thank all residents and stakeholders who support gender inclusion; and appeal to all in our community to please, continue to encourage your circle that they might decide to join you, as you reignite your passion. Collectively let us #InspireInclusion. There is a quote that coins it aptly; “A woman is human. She is not better, wiser, stronger, more intelligent, more responsible than a man. Likewise, she is never less. Equality should be a given”.  It’s been said that individually we are all responsible for our own thoughts and actions; all day every day. As the quote says: “When treatment of women is not equitable, we must take action! And we must do this every time”!

We must create a Cayman Islands where our females and males, have equal opportunity; not only in sports but in every area of their lives; we must, continue to join forces. To attain this, it is imperative that we remain resolute; and unite communally as a people, that calls for inclusion for all. We must stand for no less. That way our girls and boys; women and men will all be positioned for better opportunities and a chance for a brighter future. When women, have improved lives and opportunities, it is a fact, that it lends to a better quality of life for all.
