Hoop dreams popped but fighting spirit still strong

The Cayman 3x3 men’s basketball team were competitive but got edged out by Nigeria (21-17), Scotland (22-13) and Guyana (21-17). From the opening possession until the final basket, Cayman stood toe-to-toe with Nigeria in a contest that had fans on the edge of their seats. Every run was answered. Every possession mattered. The game remained neck-and-neck throughout, with the crowd fully engaged as our players refused to back down against one of the tournament favourites.

Nigeria’s superior size eventually proved to be the difference. Their ability to secure several key offensive rebounds created second-chance scoring opportunities at crucial moments, allowing them to narrowly edge ahead in the closing stages. Yet even with that advantage, Cayman never stopped fighting.

Cayman displayed incredible composure, resilience, and belief, matching Nigeria’s intensity possession after possession. Their defensive pressure, ball movement, and relentless effort demonstrated that Cayman is capable of competing with some of the very best teams in the Commonwealth.

The women’s 3x3 team also found it tough, losing to the gigantic Fiji (16-6), Uganda (21-7) and Jamaica (21-5). Against Fiji, taking a quality international team the entire length of the game is a testament to the resilience, toughness, and competitive spirit of the Cayman women. Their effort on the defensive end was outstanding, and they demonstrated that they are capable of competing with established basketball nations on one of the world’s biggest stages.

Every possession reflected the pride of wearing the Cayman Islands jersey. Every defensive stop, loose ball, and hustle play reinforced the culture that this team is building—a culture founded on determination, unity, and never giving up.
