House of Parliament Takes Another Step Towards Greater Accessibility

The Parliament of the Cayman Islands has taken another step towards improving accessibility at the House of Parliament with the recent installation of a powered chair lift at the building’s main staircase.

The new chair lift provides additional assistance for persons with limited mobility, helping to make access to the public gallery of the Parliament building easier and more comfortable for invited guests and members of the public.

The installation forms part of the Parliament Management Commission’s continued efforts to

improve accessibility within the House of Parliament and ensure that the institution remains welcoming and accessible to all persons.

Speaker of the Parliament, Hon. D. Ezzard Miller, said the installation reflects Parliament’s

commitment to ensuring that the institution is accessible and welcoming to all. “The House of Parliament is the people’s House, and it is important that all members of our community can

access it. The installation of the powered chair lift is another step towards making our Parliament more accessible and inclusive, particularly for persons who may have difficulty using the stairs.

We want everyone who comes to Parliament, whether to attend a Sitting, participate in an event or to simply visit, to feel that this institution is open and accessible to them.”

The project also supports Parliament’s strategic objectives for 2026 and 2027, which include

accessibility improvements to the Parliament Building as part of its planned capital works programme.

The powered chair lift is now installed and available for use by persons requiring assistance when accessing the public gallery, which is located in the upper section of the House of Parliament.
