Jagmeet Singh has college scouts circling
The NBA is always looking to expand its global reach of basketball and they are hoping that a teenager from India can help them expand to the most populous country on earth.
An 18-year-old basketball phenom nicknamed ‘Indian Wemby’ is capturing the attention of top colleges and says he aspires to one day join the NBA. “The ultimate dream is the NBA,” Jagmeet Singh told ABC News’ Danny New.
Seven foot four inch Singh grew up in northern India. He started playing basketball aged 14 and was recruited to a local basketball academy while playing at a park. The high schooler is currently preparing for his senior year at Victory Rock Prep in Sarasota, Florida.
He has drawn comparisons to San Antonio Spurs centre Victor Wembanyama, who also stands 7 feet, 4 inches tall, and was drafted from France into the NBA as the No. 1 pick in 2023, most recently playing with the Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals. He was the MVP.
Singh said he thinks of his father Jaswinder, who died earlier this year following a heart attack, “every time” he’s playing on the court. “He just wanted me to get his name out, get India’s name out, make him proud,” Singh said.
Meanwhile, other recent NBA MVPs include foreign-born stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo. It’s too early to know if Singh could ever reach that type of level, but the pathway does exist.
