With the preseason rallies completed, the boys and girls were eager to begin the regular season. During the league season, games are always played at school sites, usually on a home/away basis, and with both girls and boys teams playing on the same day.  That minimizes the need for teams to travel every week to a neutral site and also means that students from the host school can play in front of their fellow students and supporters.  This past Friday, January 12th, the newest season began with a slew of games scheduled across the island.

The first tip-off for Joanna Clarke Primary School was at their own against the girls’ and boys’ teams from Cayman Academy.  These two games were projected to be heavily contested, evenly matched affairs.   The reality played out in that manner.

At the beginning of the girls’ game, the athletes from both schools struggled to work out the kinks in their game plan and skills.  However, it was not long before both teams seemed to gel and to get all the team members involved.

The boys’ game was much of the same.  Nerves and enthusiasm overruled skill at first, and then the talent of the players started to show through.  Attackers were intently guarded, passes were well defended, and points were hard-earned.  Although few in number, the spectators were on the edge of their seats at every moment.  It is the hope that for remaining games on the league calendar, there can be more individuals that make it out to the games to support these young athletes.

After the final whistle had blown for both games, the Joanna Clarke Primary squads had notched their first wins for the season.  The girls’ game ended up with the score Joanna Clarke 9, Cayman Academy 5.  For the boys, it was Joanna Clarke 6, Cayman Academy 2.

As mentioned, these were not the only games on the schedule.  Three other matchups happened in both the girls’ and boys’ leagues.  The following is a roundup of those games.

Girls: SJACPS 10pts to GTPS 2pts; CIS 10pts to Prep B 8pts; Island Primary 20pts to Theoline McCoy 2pts.

Boys: GTPS 4pts to SJACPS 0pts; Prep B 36pts to CIS 2pts; Island Primary 4pts to Theoline McCoy 0pts.
