Inter-School Athletics Championships Celebrate Talent, Endeavour and Records

Hundreds of student-athletes from across the Cayman Islands demonstrated exceptional talent, determination, and school pride during the 2026 Inter-Primary and Inter-Secondary Athletics Championships, held over two exciting weeks at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

The annual championships brought together students from government, private, and independent schools to compete in a full programme of track and field events, including sprints, middle-distance races, relays, and field competitions such as long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, javelin, turbo javelin, and ball throw.

The Inter-Secondary Track and Field Championships, held from 2–5 March, featured four days of high-level competition among secondary school athletes. Events included preliminary rounds, semi-finals, and championship finals across multiple age divisions. Highlights included the highly anticipated sprint finals, 1500m races, and relay events such as the Mixed 800m Relay, 4x100m relays, and the 4x400m relays.

Following strong performances across the competition, John Gray High School was crowned the Overall Secondary School Champions.

The Inter-Primary Athletics Championships, held from 9–12 March, brought together hundreds of younger athletes competing across five age divisions. The meet included sprint and middle-distance races, relays, and field events designed to encourage participation, skill development, and sportsmanship among primary school students.

Red Bay Primary School eventually came out on top following several excellent results.

Throughout the week, students competed with enthusiasm while being cheered on by classmates, teachers, coaches, and families who filled the stands in support of their schools.

Acting Director of the Department of Education Services, Dr Richard Wildman, praised the athletes and the wider school community for their participation and support.

“These championships continue to showcase the incredible talent, determination, and teamwork of our students across the Cayman Islands,” said Dr. Wildman. “From our youngest primary school athletes to our secondary school competitors, the commitment and sportsmanship displayed throughout the events have been inspiring. We are proud of every student who participated and grateful to the coaches, teachers, parents, and volunteers who helped make these championships a success.”
