The CPL will substantially boost Jamaica’s economy
Jamaica’s sports tourism industry will be boosted by the return of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 cricket tournament this summer.
Jamaica’s re-engagement with the will bolster sports tourism and stimulate economic activity nationwide, said Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett.
He said: “Cricket is not just a sport for us… it’s a part of the economy. It drives jobs, it enables the development of varying skills and, in the process, it brings large numbers of visitors to Jamaica to consume our assets at a price.”
Hosting CPL matches in August and September will broaden Jamaica’s reach into new markets, attracting more tourists from south-east Asia as well as solidifying established visitors from America, Europe and the rest of the Caribbean. It will also increase global TV audiences and inspire them to visit Jamaica, he said.
“Jamaica has three powerful words that describe us — food, music, and love… and these three are at the heart of what cricket is all about,” Bartlett said.
