Mahomes targets unique double

Patrick Mahomes is eyeing a Super Bowl ring

When Patrick Mahomes signed a $450 million 10-year contract two years ago, it astonished the NFL community. Yet he has already proved to be worth every cent.

Having led the Kansas City Chiefs to a seventh-straight AFC West division title, Mahomes is many people’s favourite to take home a second MVP title within his first five seasons as an NFL starting quarterback, having also won in 2018.

The 27-year-old Texan has already notched a fourth career season with over 4,500 passing yards and 35 passing touchdowns, with league-leading marks of 4,720 and 37 in 2022. Only Tom Brady, and his long career, has beaten that, with five.

Mahomes also needs just 522 more total offensive yards from Kansas City’s final two games to see him pass Drew Brees’s - 5,562 in 2011 - for the most in NFL history.

As much as a second league MVP award is within his sights, it’s a second Super Bowl ring he wants by next month.

The cancellation of the Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game due to Damar Hamlin’s cardiac emergency on the field cost the Bills a shot at the top seed in the AFC. The Chiefs needed the Bills to lose once in the final two weeks and benefited from the Bills recording a no contest.

The Chiefs took advantage of the situation and clinched the top seed with a 31-13 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday. The Chiefs finish the season 14-3 and are the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

No wonder Mahomes fancies his chances of a Super Bowl ring and MVP gong this year.
