MESSAGE FROM HE THE GOVERNOR ON HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE

The adverse weather has had an impact on our weekend of celebrations for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee. But it cannot dampen the respect and admiration many across our Islands feel towards Her Majesty, the first British monarch ever to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, marking 70 years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Overseas Territories, the Realms (independent countries where HM The Queen is Head of State) and the Commonwealth.

The Queen has ruled for longer than any other monarch in British history, becoming a much loved and highly respected figure across the globe.

Her extraordinary reign has seen her travel more widely than any other monarch, undertaking over 260 official visits overseas, including nearly 100 state visits. She has undertaken two visits to our shores - in 1983 and 1994.

She has been the UK’s foremost diplomat, affirming old relationships and building new connections.

No one has done more than Her Majesty to strengthen the bonds of friendship, understanding and respect between the UK and the rest of the world.

As Head of the Commonwealth, the Queen has dedicated herself to the service of its people.

Throughout years of tremendous change in international affairs, The Queen has been a source of continuity and stability.

With her power to transcend politics and geography, she has touched the lives of millions of people across the world.

The Queen is known for her sense of duty and her devotion to a life of service. She has been an important figurehead for the UK and its Overseas Territories during times of enormous social change.

I know I speak for everyone across our Islands of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman in sending Her Majesty our very best wishes for her Platinum Jubilee and 96th Birthday.

I know Her Majesty is proud of the incredible progress Cayman has made throughout her reign. From tough beginnings and seafaring roots, Cayman is today a thriving, highly successful and prosperous country, thanks to the industry, hard work and great talent of its people. Cayman’s transformation over the Reign of Her Majesty is a remarkable achievement.

We will have a reduced programme of events because of the weather. My thanks to the Platinum Jubilee Steering Committee, chaired by Cabinet Secretary Sam Rose for their hard work, resilience and flexibility as plans have evolved.

The weather outlook for Monday 6 June looks much more promising. I very much look forward to welcoming members of our community to Government House for the Queen’s Birthday Parade and Party on Monday from 1700-2000, which is followed by fireworks on Seven Mile Beach.

God bless Her Majesty the Queen and God Bless the Cayman Islands!
