Students enjoy connecting and engaging without their phones as part of the ‘Phones Down, Minds Up’ campaign.
The Ministry of Education and Training has published the Mobile Phone (Safe School) Policy, formalising its position on the use of personal mobile phones and other electronic devices in government schools.
Effective at the start of the 2026/2027 academic year, the policy applies to all government schools and establishes that students may not use personal mobile phones or other electronic devices capable of communication or connectivity during the school day, subject to the specific exceptions set out in the policy.
Minister for Education and Training, Hon. Rolston Anglin, said the policy reflects the Government’s commitment to maintaining safe, focused and supportive learning environments across government schools.
“Our students deserve every opportunity to engage fully in their education, free from unnecessary distractions during the school day. This policy establishes a clear Government-wide position that supports learning while recognising that there are circumstances where specific exceptions are appropriate.”
The Ministry has also launched ‘Phones Down, Minds Up’, a public information campaign that will run over the coming weeks to help students, parents, educators and the wider community understand the policy and its benefits for student learning, well-being and safety.
