New Campaign uses Cayman’s Landmarks to bring Local History to life

The Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage has launched a new national campaign, Legends Behind Our Landmarks, designed to deepen public awareness and appreciation of the Cayman Islands’ rich cultural and historical heritage.

The campaign invites the public to explore the stories behind some of the islands’ most recognisable places, from historic sites like Pedro St. James and Fort George to the familiar roads and locations such as Shedden Road and Reverend Blackman Road, helping younger generations build a deeper understanding of Cayman’s history and the individual whose names and legacies continue to shape the islands today.

At the heart of the initiative is a focus on the people, moments, and milestones that have shaped the Cayman Islands, particularly the historical figures whose names continue to live on through roads, districts, buildings and public spaces across the islands. By highlighting these individuals, the Ministry aims to foster a stronger connection between the community and the legacy of those who contributed to Cayman’s development.

A dedicated website, LegendsBehindOurLandmarks.ky, serves as the hub of the campaign. The site features an interactive map allowing users to explore landmarks across all three islands through accessible stories, historical information and engaging facts.

Building on the foundation of the Ministry’s Weh We From campaign, Legends Behind Our Landmarks represents the next chapter in promoting Caymanian identity, heritage, and cultural storytelling through interactive and educational experiences.

Legends Behind Our Landmarks aligns with the Cayman Islands Government’s Strategic Policy Statement priorities focused on preserving Caymanian identity and culture through education, public engagement, and accessible learning opportunities.

Commenting on the launch, Minister for Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage, Hon. Isaac Rankine, said: “Our heritage is more than history preserved in books. It lives within our communities, landmarks, and the stories passed from generation to generation.
