Opposition calls on Government to reconsider the cruise berthing project

Government 21 Feb, 2020 Follow News

Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Arden McLean, JP

Leader of the Opposition Hon. V. Arden McLean called on the Government to now consider abandoning the Cruise Berthing project and to get on with other initiatives which are needed in the country. Citing the widespread opposition to the proposed project, the potential for destroying our natural resources and the Government’s failure to justify their business case for the piers, Mr. McLean questioned the Governments motivation for even taking the process to this point.

Mr. McLean stated that, “It is time the Government abandon this mission to nowhere. The people have spoken and now the courts have found the Governments attempts to manipulate the referendum process unconstitutional. This is serious and the Government needs to reflect on what message they are sending to the people they claim to represent.”

Mr. McLean remained confident that any attempt to go to the polls in the face of all that has occurred will result in a resounding defeat for the Unity Government, “The people have had enough of this Governments management style. We cannot get resolution on the ongoing beach access issues, we cannot get the Government to listen to the people regarding Smith Barcadere, the Government still has not properly addressed the traffic woes plaguing the country, yesterday’s ECOFIN listing of the Cayman Islands as a non-cooperative jurisdiction now requires immediate action and there are many other high priority concerns we need to address.”
