Orthopaedic Specialists Visit Cayman for Inaugural Meeting

The Cayman Islands Health Services Authority (HSA) welcomes a select cohort of Finland’s top bone and joint specialists for the inaugural Finnish-Caymanian Orthopaedic Society (FICOS) meeting this December. The event, which takes place 3-5 December, will include clinical presentations on orthopaedic medicine, a tour of the Cayman Islands Hospital and round table discussions between visiting and resident physicians.

FICOS was founded by orthopaedic surgeon and HSA Clinical Head of Surgery, Dr. Pekko Kuusela, to build rapport between his local colleagues and those in his native Finland. “Finland and Cayman’s differences in climate, culture and people offer a wide range for discussion around how these and other factors affect orthopaedic patients in both jurisdictions. FICOS hopes to serve as a think tank for orthopaedic treatment to benefit those who suffer from bone and joint issues”, said Dr. Kuusela.

“We are pleased to welcome our Finnish delegates to the HSA and to provide a forum for in-depth education on orthopaedic medicine”, said HSA Medical Director Dr. Delroy Jefferson. “While the physical distance surmounts over five thousand miles between Cayman and Finland, establishing camaraderie between physicians in both places may aid the expansion of our telemedicine services in the future. We applaud Dr. Kuusela and the members of FICOS for embracing the opportunity to collaborate.”

“Orthopaedic medicine is one of the most sought after services at the Health Services Authority. In 2018 alone we saw over 2,200 patients and successfully performed 380 orthopaedic surgeries including knee and hip replacements,” confirmed Dr Jefferson.

Local medical practitioners can earn up to 11 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits for attending the meetings on 3-5 December in the Hibiscus Conference Room B at the Cayman Islands Hospital. There is no cost to attend however space is limited. To register, interested persons should email Dr Kuusela at pekko.kuusela@hsa.ky.
