The Private School Association will be kicking off it’s annual indoor volleyball league starting on Monday, September 23rd. Despite what the name of the organization might suggest, the league is actually open to Government schools as well. In fact, John Gray will be entering a team for the third year in a row. Technical Director, Javid Ali, noted “It’s so great to see how they have grown and developed to the point where it’s now a schools league and not just private schools.” That is just the first of many changes that the PSA league is undergoing this year as they are introducing two age brackets and discontinuing the co-ed teams. Ali believes the introduction of the under 18 and under 14 division is going to be very promising for the development of future athletes. He said: “Especially with the under 14 division which will help to get the even younger players involved.”
Cayman Prep teacher, Lisa Kemp, is no stranger to the school volleyball league as she has coached the team at Prep for consecutive years. Being an avid volleyball player herself, Kemp is the ideal person to oversee the organization for this year’s PSA League and is a welcomed addition. Kemp is overly excited with her new role as she explained: “Last year I loved seeing the enthusiasm and love for volleyball amongst the students and the development from school teams to the Youth National Development team. This year we are moving from co-ed teams to single sex teams and I’m really looking forward to another successful year of growth in school volleyball on island.”
Running a school league can be a huge undertaking, so CIVF is doing it’s best to support the athletes, teachers, and coaches. The Federation recently paid a visit to St. Ignatius to donate balls and equipment and visiting coach, Pitter Rosa, also attended one of their practices.
Kemp is overly grateful for the support thus far and she wanted to acknowledge the volleyball community at large. “A big shout out to the volunteer coaches, referees, and parents supporting the sport and the Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation for all of their help.”
