Public Advisory: Police Warn About Text Message and Phone Scams

Police have received reports of persons receiving text messages with links, that when clicked, triggers a phone call from persons claiming to be from a bank or financial institution.

The callers have been informing persons of fraudulent activities in their accounts and requesting banking details to assist with solving the problem.

The RCIPS is informing the public that this type of engagement could potentially be a scam, and the public should not click links in text messages from numbers you are not familiar with, and to be vigilant when speaking with persons over the phone.

Remember that banking and other financial institutions would not ask for banking details over the phone. If you are suspicious of the call you’ve received then walk into the institution yourself and speak with a representative to verify the call. Do not give personal and banking details over a phone call.

Anyone who believes they may have received one of this fraudulent phone calls are encouraged to report the incident to their financial institutions. Anyone with information about these phone calls are encouraged to submit a tip via the RCIPS website at www.rcips.ky> .
