Masai Russell intends to stay unbeaten for the season
Masai Russell heads to Brussels this weekend chasing her first Diamond League title, just days after shattering the 100m hurdles World Record in Zurich.
The 100m hurdles Olympic champion will compete for her first Diamond League Trophy at the Brussels Diamond League Final this Saturday, 5 September. The event is also on Friday, 4 September.
Russell shattered the women’s 100m hurdles record with a stunning 12.09 seconds. The 26-year-old American has won all 10 of the 100m hurdles finals she has competed in this season, including six victories on the 2026 Diamond League circuit.
“The job’s not done yet,” she said. “The only thing I’m thinking about right now is the next two races I’ve got to run. We still have a Diamond League Trophy to win. I’ve still got to win [World Athletics Ultimate Championships].”
The World Athletics Ultimate Championship is a new competition designed to bring the sport’s biggest stars together for one final showdown at the end of the season.
It’s in Budapest from 11–13 September. The inaugural edition of the event will pit Olympic champions, world champions and Diamond League winners against one another.
World Athletics president and Team GB Olympian, Sebastian Coe is fully backing this new competition.
The total purse at this year’s meet will be $10 million, with gold medallists winning $150,000.
The championship features 28 events across three evening sessions. Unlike a traditional championship, there are no heats before every event.
Certain track disciplines will have two semi-finals before a final, while the 1500m, 5000m and relays are straight finals.
