Ben Shelton looks destined to win a Grand Slam
Ben Shelton came so close to winning the US Open and as he is only 23 has justifiably high hopes of one-day lifting that coveted title.
Top seed Alexander Zverev crushed American dreams on Sunday, overcoming Shelton in a four-set battle to claim his maiden US Open title.
The German was too good for the eighth-seeded American prevailing 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 5-7 6-2 in the final at Flushing Meadows.
Zverev added the New York title to his collection after winning the French Open in June.
Shelton’s bid to become the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick in 2003 was dashed. He was also aiming to become only the second black man to win this championship after Arthur Ashe in 1975. He was supported by a partisan crowd of 23,000 spectators inside the stadium named in Ashe’s honour.
