Dr. Beverly Shirley

The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus is pleased to welcome Dr. Beverly Shirley to the Cayman Islands. Dr. Shirley has been appointed Programme Manager for the British Overseas Territories (BOTS) and will be based at the UWI Open Campus Cayman Islands. In this capacity she will work closely with the Manager for the UWI Open Campus BOTS, Dr. Phyllis Fleming-Banks in the development and delivery of the academic programmes within the British Overseas Territories (The Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, The British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, Montserrat and Bermuda).

Dr. Shirley holds a PhD in Governance and Public Policy and has been making stellar contributions to the University for over 21 years. She has spearheaded several partnerships between the UWI Open Campus and a range of public and private sector organisations. These partnerships have been aimed at combining formal learning with real-world industry-driven applications so that the role of the University in building the educational capacity of regional communities may be achieved.

According to Dr. Shirley, “There is absolutely no doubt that formal training is an imperative, but we also need to recognise the importance of industry-related transferable skills. The UWI, which is now ranked #1 in the Caribbean and within the top 4% of recognised universities across the world by Times Higher Education, is quite focused on a holistic approach to education.”

Dr. Fleming-Banks, who is based on Anguilla, says that she is pleased to welcome Dr. Shirley to the BOTS Team. “Dr. Shirley’s presence at the UWI Open Campus Cayman Site is expected to increase the accessibility of our local communities to quality programmes and courses. We are excited about the increasing number of programmes at the Continuing and Professional Education level, as well as those in the Bachelors, Masters and PhD programmes,” the BOTS Manager said.

The UWI is an accredited regional university with five Campuses and offers over 800 programme options ranging from Postgraduate and Undergraduate degrees, Diplomas and Certificates - in Social Sciences, Medical Sciences, Science & Technology, Humanities and Education, Food & Agriculture, Engineering, Law and Sports. This august institution has produced Nobel Laureates, Rhodes scholars, regional Prime Ministers and other top government officials, distinguished medical practitioners among others.
