Surfers Paradise

For all the disruption it caused to our lives worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic is a memory that will never fade. With true Caymanian grit and determination, we rose to the challenge and in many instances came out of it the better.

One of those is a better appreciation for what we take for granted in Cayman…but which many people from all over the world come here to experience and appreciate.

During COVID-19, when overseas travel was very much a hassle, Caymanian Times ran a series of articles promoting inland tourism. The theme back then was: ‘Staycation in Paradise’.

That was part of an overall national effort to keep the tourism industry and the economy afloat during that period. Looking back, many of us rediscovered Cayman with a renewed sense of appreciation for what we have been taking for granted.

In a sense, we saw Cayman through the eyes of tourists. In many senses, we re-experienced Cayman in a way that stimulated our senses in what we saw, felt, heard, smelled and tasted. It was all that we knew but experienced anew as it wasn’t uncommon up to that point to have a weekend or special event break at one of our many world-class resorts on Grand Cayman or the Sister Islands.

But the COVID experience made it different. It gave that kind of getaway a deeper purpose. What was then an ‘escape’ to rejuvenate is now an escape to both rejuvenate and re-appreciate in the widest sense; family, friends…and Cayman.

We say, “Let’s do it some more! Getaway but stay.”

Call this type of vacation what you may: staycation, Cayman-cation, or just ‘Caytion’.

Cayman has much to offer residents as well as visitors. As we wrote during the COVID pandemic, this alternative to travelling abroad offers “a very promising prospect for a much-needed change of scenery.”

We all could do with a bit of it and a lot more of Cayman. Plus, the possibilities are limitless; from enjoying the amenities offered to visitors, to a greater appreciation of what makes Cayman exceptional as a preferred destination.

And this experience also offers a valuable insight into the importance and effort that go into maintaining the high standards for which Cayman’s tourism is world-famous. For the more enterprising, it could mean combining a staycation with a hands-on introduction to aspects of running a resort (a certain type of ‘deal-maker’ would see the trade-off possibilities in this). It also gives a first-hand view through local eyes of the challenges, environmental and otherwise, the industry has to deal with.

Who knows, the spark that lights the flame of new careers and new opportunities in the tourism industry could even come out of this.

The way we see it, even more than before this is a win-win.

A Cayman Staycation might just be the real deal. We did it before, now let’s do it some more.
