UCCI’S VOCATIONAL GRADUATION CEREMONY MARKS A MILESTONE FOR WORK-BASED LEARNING IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

The University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI) celebrated a significant milestone in work-based learning in the Cayman islands last weekend with its inaugural Professional, Technical, and Educational Training (PTET) graduation ceremony.

The event, which took place on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at the Harquail Theatre in Grand Cayman, welcomed 53 graduates and included a keynote speech by the Deputy Premier, Minister for Education and Minister for District Administration and Lands, the Honourable Juliana O’Connor-Connolly.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards and certificates to the graduates, acknowledging their dedication and hard work. Notable awards included the UCCI Employment Support Award presented by Invenio Global Search, the UCCI Internship Placement Award by the Student Life Department, and the UCCI Partner Resilience Support Award by the Workforce Opportunities and Residency Cayman (WORC). Greentech Solar Ltd. was honoured with the UCCI Community Partner Award for their contributions.

UCCI also extended gratitude to RESEMBID, which has played a considerable role in allowing UCCI to develop its professional and technical offer in the Cayman Islands. RESEMBID, funded by the European Union and implemented by Expertise France - the development cooperation agency of the Government of France, supports sustainable human development efforts in 12 Caribbean Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) has funded two major projects at UCCI, since July 2022.

Dr. Robert W. Robertson, President, and Chief Executive Officer of UCCI, emphasized the increasing importance of focused, industry-recognized credentials in shaping the future of education within the Cayman Islands. He commented, “This graduation ceremony marks a pivotal moment for UCCI as we continue to show the importance of workforce-ready credentials in education in the Cayman Islands. Providing people with qualifications that will help them advance in their professional lives is a cornerstone of UCCI’s mission. The last academic year was incredibly busy for professional and technical education with a huge demand in people wanted to advance their careers. This is one area of higher education that we know will continue to grow to improve the lives of the Cayman community.”

Paul Puckerin, Master of Ceremonies, extended a warm welcome to all attendees, setting the stage for a series of inspiring congratulatory remarks.

Mr. Puckerin, commented. “The UCCI PTET graduation ceremony is a testament to the dedication of both the faculty and our graduates, to advancing education and workforce readiness. Tonight, we mark the beginning of a new chapter in UCCI’s journey to equip individuals with the skills they need to thrive in the evolving world of work.”
