United start new era hopeful of positive result against City

Manchester United are having another turbulent season

Manchester United’s latest managerial change sees Michael Carrick begin his reign with the toughest possible debut, a local derby with the mighty Manchester City.

The newly-appointed interim manager will pit his wits against Pep Guardiola for the first time in Saturday’s thriller at Old Trafford

Carrick has replaced former teammate Darren Fletcher at the Theatre of Dreams on a deal until the end of the season. The ex-Middlesbrough boss edged out ex-teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to land the job following Ruben Amorim’s surprise sacking on January 5. He has taken over a side who last won against Newcastle on Boxing Day.

As a result of their 2-1 loss to the Seagulls, seventh-placed United have been dumped out at the first stage of both domestic cups for the first time since the 1981/82 season.

And with the club without European football this term, United will be playing just 40 games this campaign - the first time this has happened since 1915. At least United will have Bryan Mbeumo back from duty for Cameroon at Afcon.
