Yen ranks highly at World Finals
Jet ski racing is popular in Cayman
Cayman’s jet ski community is celebrating a major international breakthrough after Tevin Yen returned from the IJSBA World Finals in Arizona with an epic honour.
Competing in the Expert Runabout 1100 Superstock class in Lake Havasu for the first time, Yen finished fourth overall.
Yen tells Radio Cayman Sports Xtra: “Very proud to be able to bring home a world title to Cayman, number four in the world in the expert 1100 superstar class. You know, I’ve only been racing jet skis since March of this year, not even a year. So to be able to come on the world stage and achieve something of that calibre is a great feeling. Especially when there’s guys in my class who are five and six-time world champions from Thailand, Philippines and in America. Going up against that kind of competition, it really opens your eye to what the sport has to offer overseas and the level that you need to be at to be able to compete on the world stage.”
Yen says the tournament extended him in ways he had never experienced before, especially in the opening race.
“For me, the race that pushed me the hardest was definitely the first one. Coming from Cayman, racing back home, my class back home is normally five laps a race and this race was a timed race for 12 minutes plus an additional lap.”
The confidence and experience Yen garnered put him in good stead for his next domestic competition. He said: “The next step for me as I’m building on this season, I’m actually getting ready for the NSR race in Cayman on 9 November in Northside.” And then he’ll feature in the Eastern Surf Challenge in January and then the SEWA series, which starts March of 2027.
