Inter-Academy Quiz competition at John Gray High School

On Wednesday, the 24th of March the phenomenal Spanish Department at the John Gray High School hosted their 2nd annual Inter-Academy Quiz Competition. The event saw over 48 students participating from the four academies. The students' dedication and hard work across academies were evidenced in the astounding and stellar performance displayed on the finals of the competition with Marlin and Tarpon. They, in great camaraderie played two sets of exciting matches and worked with determination in an intense playoff on the 24th. Congratulations to the tenacious and enthusiastic team captains Tashana Smith and Harold Gonzalez-Valdes who did an outstanding job and led their team to victory. Tarpon emerged as the champion team for the 2nd time.

"Our students have shown true resilience and have exhibited excellence and pride throughout the elimination and final rounds of the Spanish Quiz Competition. It was an enthralling event with a bonus Kahoot round that the students found exhilarating. I am proud of each participant who worked assiduously to represent their academy. A job well done!" Subject leader, Kerita Levermore-Stewart stated.

"I must express gratitude to the devoted teachers of Spanish, staff, our principal, line manager, the PTA, the many sponsors community volunteers, parents and Occasions event planners, who did not vacillate in supporting this magnificent and world class event" She added.

"Our Spanish Quiz was a great example of healthy competition in an academic area, and a real step forward to us being 'World Class' in our language teaching. The whole community came together to support the event, orchestrated by our inspirational Spanish Department. Learning a second language is so good for any future career aspiration and events like this, and other initiatives from our languages team such as trips to Cuba (before COVID), give our young people an opportunity to excel." Principal Clark stated.

The PTA president, Marva Reid has echoed the sentiments of the panelists at the event, "…this was excellent and totally amazing, we are already looking forward to next year!"

The students were elated. The team captain Tashana Smith stated that she will return for the next Spanish Quiz Competition. She mentioned that this should continue each year and students should participate in competitions like these while in high school “… it was a great exposure for all and more so to better our Spanish”

"We have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on our students as past students returned to be judges of the competition this year. We continue to reach our students by all means possible-¡Viva el Español! added Levermore-Stewart.
