Movers For Life (MFL) in the Cayman Islands freely connects persons in the community to provide motivational support.
Started on March 5, 2016, MFL founder Winston Sobers was assisted by an initial team of Dale Edwards, Daniel Campbell, Grace Johnson, and Joan Medland. The inspiration for the group came from Sobers, Edwards, and Campbell making radical lifestyle changes to lose a combined total of more than 330 pounds.
Sobers’s passion for this mission was influenced by his own lifechanging experience of losing 90 pounds, which he documented in his book, “90 Pounds Lighter”. Sobers had a vision to revolutionise the way communities interact and support each other in achieving healthy goals.
As part of his efforts, Sobers enhanced the organisation’s administrative and operational capacity. A formal name, “Movers For Life”, was established and the group registered as a non-profit organisation in March 2018.
Structured as an unincorporated group of persons to carry out its objectives, four directors were appointed — namely Winston Sobers as director and president, alongside Paula Erskine, Yolanda Clarke and Karina Alvarado.
MFL’s support includes, but is not limited to:
MFL currently has nine ‘moving connection’ points across Grand Cayman, in West Bay, George Town, Bodden Town, Savannah, and North Side.
It also has 300 movers on MFL’s WhatsApp chat.
With a vision of consistency, awareness and support, past events include the MFL target pedometer challenge, volleyball challenge, a local farm visit, a seminar on nutrition, running techniques, aquatic therapy, annual mover appreciation awards, and quarterly long walks.
