UCCI EMPOWERS CAYMAN WORKFORCE VOCATIONAL STUDENT GAIN GLOBAL SKILLS THROUGH MIAMI EDUCATIONAL TOUR
The University College of the Cayman Islands’ (UCCI) Professional and Technical Education and Training (PTET) Division recently completed a transformative educational tour to Miami, Florida (April 22-28, 2025) for its adult vocational students.
This initiative reinforces UCCI’s commitment to preparing these vocational students for the global workforce through hands-on experience and international exposure specifically designed to address Cayman’s economic needs. The delegation of faculty and students engaged in a comprehensive programme featuring tours of prestigious institutions, specialized training sessions, and cultural experiences designed to enhance their technical knowledge and professional development.
“This educational tour represents our strategic approach to workforce development that transcends traditional classroom learning,” said Dean of UCCI’s PTET Division, Paul Puckerin.
“By exposing our students and faculty to international best practices and cutting-edge technology, we’re creating pathways to global opportunities while addressing the specific workforce needs of the Cayman Islands. The knowledge and connections gained during this tour will directly translate to enhanced educational offerings at UCCI.”
Highlights of the tour included institutional visits to St. Thomas University and Miami Lakes Technical College, where participants explored diverse vocational programmes including practical nursing, cosmetology, HVAC, and automotive technology. Industry-specific training at Boreal International Training Centre and Rheem HVAC Systems, focusing on advanced vocational skills, certifications, and the latest HVAC technology innovations. Hospitality insights gained through a comprehensive tour of Hilton Miami Fort Lauderdale Hotel, examining luxury hospitality operations, sustainability practices, and event management. Sustainable construction exposure at STU’s new residential building, led by LINK Construction, showcasing eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient designs, and green economy skills.
Michelle Johnson Garcia, Provost & Chief Academic Officer of St. Thomas University (STU), commented, “We are delighted to host UCCI’s students and faculty as part of their educational tour. This collaboration strengthens our shared commitment to developing skilled professionals ready to meet evolving industry demands. The enthusiasm and engagement shown by the UCCI delegation highlights the importance of practical, globally oriented vocational training.”
The faculty, staff and students also got the opportunity o take part in cultural immersion experiences at Wynwood Walls and Downtown Miami’s Bayshore Front, including a hands-on 30-minute graffiti wall painting session.
Dean Paul Puckerin, continued, “The educational benefits of the tour will extend beyond the participating group, as the PTET faculty and students will receive follow-up training in the Cayman Islands on May 14-15 at UCCI, specifically focusing on HVAC technologies. This initiative aligns with UCCI’s mission to provide relevant, industry-connected education that prepares graduates for success in both local and international job markets.
This international educational experience exemplifies UCCI’s dedication to equipping adult vocational students with the practical skills and global perspective needed to strengthen the Cayman Islands’ workforce. By providing these opportunities to Caymanian adults seeking career advancement through vocational training, UCCI is directly contributing to economic development and self-sufficiency across key industries vital to the islands’ future growth and prosperity.
This initiative comes at a historic moment, as UCCI celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2025.
