Cayman Motoring Federation Hosts Second FIA Motorsport-in-a-Box Autocross Event With A Focus on Sustainability
The Cayman Motoring Federation (CMF) successfully hosted its second Motorsport-in-a-Box FIA Autocross initiative this year on Sunday, 24 August 2025, at the Foster’s parking lot opposite Priced Right. Beginning at 11AM, the event drew a wide range of vehicles — from SUVs and hybrids to saloons and high-powered exotics — showcasing Cayman’s enthusiasm for grassroots motorsport.
Brought to Cayman by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the Motorsport-in-a-Box is an innovative kit that transforms everyday spaces like parking lots into safe autocross tracks, giving drivers of all ages a chance to experience motorsport in a fun, accessible way. Autocross is a timed motorsport competition designed to build driver safety, awareness, and car control skills in a controlled environment. Before competition began, all participants took part in a mandatory driver’s briefing covering safety rules, walked the course with CMF officials to learn the layout and discuss strategies, and had their vehicles technically inspected for safety compliance.
Each competitor completed three timed runs of the course, with their best two runs combined to determine final standings. A DNF (Did Not Finish) was recorded if a driver went off course or missed a gate. This ensured fairness and highlighted the importance of precision as much as speed.

Sustainability Efforts
In line with CMF’s commitment to achieving the FIA 1-Star Environmental Accreditation, the event incorporated several sustainable practices including partnering with local company Refuel Cayman:
• Online registration, waivers, and payments, eliminating paper usage
• No single-use plastics at the venue
• Partnership with Foster’s, a leader in local sustainability practices including composting, food donations, solar power, and water conservation
• Collaboration with Refuel Cayman, who provided $25 fuel certificates to encourage the use of cleaner, more sustainable fuel options
Additionally, CMF conducted an event sustainability survey with both drivers and spectators, ensuring community engagement in building greener motorsport in the Cayman Islands.
As part of CMF’s sustainability efforts, we also measured the carbon footprint of the event. On average, each car produced less than 1 kilogram of CO₂ across all four runs — about the same as leaving a single light bulb on overnight. With 15 cars participating, the entire event’s footprint was only around 10–12 kg of CO₂, very small compared to everyday driving. Importantly, drivers using Refuel’s cleaner, more sustainable fuel were able to further reduce their emissions, showing how greener fuel choices can make an immediate difference. By choosing Refuel, Cayman’s drivers can enjoy motorsport while also helping protect our islands for the future.
Building Cayman’s Motorsport Future
“Autocross is not just about competition — it’s about teaching drivers the importance of car control, safety, and responsibility on the road,” said CMF President Jane Scaletta. “Through the FIA’s Motorsport-in-a-Box programme, we are opening the door for Caymanians of all ages to experience motorsport in a safe and structured way. This initiative makes grassroots racing more accessible by bringing the track to the community, more sustainable through our FIA 1-Star environmental practices, and more impactful by giving drivers real skills that carry over into everyday driving. It’s about building confidence, promoting responsibility, and inspiring the next generation of safe, smart drivers in Cayman.”
The event demonstrated the growing popularity of autocross as an entry-level motorsport, allowing drivers of all ages and skill levels to participate in a fun, structured, and safe environment.
